The army seems to have provided some outlet for the less serious side of the young earl and then the older duke – he always said he loved the camaraderie of sleeping in a tent on Salisbury Plain and drinking tea while sitting on a camp stool in freezing weather. It was moments like these that took him back to the happier side of his childhood in the woods and fields of Ely Lodge.

But throughout his time in the army and in the family business he was dogged by a feeling that he was an imposter, with past failures casting a long shadow.

I do feel a bit of a fraud sometimes. I felt it in the TA sometimes and certainly in my other life. It’s as if I am a figurehead, a sort of mascot only, and that I’m just moving bits of paper uselessly around my desk. Though I am involved in decision-making, the family business could run perfectly well without me and in gloomy moments I’ve sometimes felt it might have been better run by someone else because, as you can imagine, I was never quite treated as someone would have been treated had he become chairman on merit. I think I am quite good at making decisions but inevitably people defer to me and as I know that’s what’s happening I try to defer to the experts even when perhaps sometimes I should not. It can seem like a terrible muddle.
